In 2018, former San Francisco 49ers player, Rae Carruth, was involved in a highly publicized criminal case. Carruth, a wide receiver drafted by the 49ers in 1997, was convicted in 2001 for his role in a conspiracy to murder Cherica Adams, the mother of his unborn child. The case gained significant media attention due to the brutality of the crime and Carruth’s status as a professional athlete.
Adams was murdered in November 1999, after being shot multiple times while pregnant. The motive behind the crime was related to Carruth’s desire to avoid financial and personal responsibilities associated with the child. Following his conviction, Carruth was sentenced to 18 to 24 years in prison. He was released in 2018 after serving nearly 19 years, having been denied parole on several occasions.
