**49ers Sign Veteran Cornerback to One-Year Deal**
In a strategic move to bolster their secondary, the San Francisco 49ers have signed veteran cornerback Darius Slay to a one-year contract. The deal, reportedly worth $5 million, includes incentives based on performance and playing time.
Slay, a five-time Pro Bowl selection and one-time All-Pro, brings a wealth of experience and playmaking ability to the 49ers’ defense. Over his career, he has accumulated 30 interceptions and 121 passes defensed, establishing himself as one of the premier cornerbacks in the NFL.
The addition of Slay is seen as a critical move for the 49ers, who are looking to strengthen their defensive backfield following a season where they struggled against the pass. General Manager John Lynch expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “Darius is a proven leader and a dynamic player. His skill set and experience will greatly benefit our secondary and help us compete at the highest level.”
Slay’s signing also provides the 49ers with much-needed depth and versatility in their cornerback rotation. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan highlighted Slay’s leadership qualities and ability to mentor younger players, saying, “Darius brings more than just his on-field talent. Slay, who spent the previous two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, had a solid 2023 campaign, recording 3 interceptions and 11 passes defensed. His presence is expected to complement the 49ers’ existing defensive stars and add a new dimension to their defensive strategies.
