Andy Murray may have to retire at the Olympics without any celebration, as tennis officials have acknowledged they might be unable to arrange a farewell ceremony for the two-time gold medalist.

Murray is gearing up to bid farewell to Wimbledon in the coming days, participating in the men’s doubles with his brother Jamie and the mixed doubles with Emma Raducanu. While the All England Club is prepared to host a retirement ceremony if he wishes, the situation might be different for his final match at the Olympics.

At 37, Murray has spent most of the year preparing for his final match this summer. He has decided that the Paris Games at Roland Garros will be the venue for his retirement, having been selected to compete in both the singles and the doubles with Dan Evans.

However, Murray’s plans might be thwarted as the ITF has revealed that the International Olympic Committee could block a farewell ceremony for the three-time Grand Slam champion. “I think we are in discussions with various players,” ITF president David Haggerty said on Thursday.
