In the latest episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 9, RuPaul referred to the Las Vegas legend as one of her “firstborn” RuGirls. Shannel told Blavity’s Shadow and Act that the dedication she has put into her craft has helped her remain one of the most iconic queens in the history of Drag Race.

“I think it’s an honor,” she said. “There are hundreds of queens now, and the fact that I keep getting asked to come back shows and proves my worth as an entertainer. Although it doesn’t define my worth, it’s a blessing to still be part of it, to be seen and acknowledged for what I do and have done for the queer communities. I’ve been in the industry for nearly 30 years, and except for the COVID shutdown, I’ve always worked. I have maintained an incredible work ethic and have headlined in Vegas for over 20 years. So, I feel very blessed.”

Shannel discussed her laser focus when crafting looks and routines, emphasizing the importance of organization. “I believe in having a clean workspace and surroundings to see clearly. I’m extremely organized and detail-oriented,” she said. “I label everything, from nails to jewelry for each outfit. This organization is crucial for a great presentation and performance, both mentally and visually.”

Despite being a formidable competitor, Shannel faced apprehension about new challenges like the Snatch Game. Preparing for this iconic challenge, which she described as “nerve-wracking,” was particularly daunting. “Watching the show from home makes the challenges seem easier than they are. The reality is, they’re tough, especially with all the pressure and production elements involved,” she said.

Shannel and Nina West both portrayed Liberace in the Snatch Game, and Shannel aimed for an accurate representation. “I wanted to do justice to Liberace by creating an iconic look with a fun flair. Although I didn’t win, I’m happy with the response from viewers, who appreciated my portrayal,” she shared. Shannel mentioned receiving numerous messages from fans who preferred her performance, noting that it was open to interpretation and praising Nina’s different approach.

Shannel’s charity, the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, is close to her heart due to her personal struggle with anxiety. “Many people experience anxiety and depression, often without understanding it. I deal with health anxiety, which intensified during COVID. The Association provides crucial tools and resources for those in need,” she explained. “It’s about digging deeper to find the root cause and getting real help, not just a quick fix.”

Additionally, Shannel finds joy in her Christmas decoration hobby, aspiring to create her own product line. “Santa’s Helper’s Design is my company, and my Christmas Instagram has grown significantly. I do high-end, over-the-top Christmas designing and installation,” she said. “Christmas is a timeless tradition that brings people together. I love the joy it brings and the chance to combine my design skills with my passion for the holiday.”
